Huntsville draws many people leaving the service. Redstone Arsenal and a large defense-contractor base are here, and Alabama treats military retirement pay favorably. This page collects the official facts you need to plan the move.
Alabama military retirement tax: fully exempt
The Alabama Department of Revenue lists military retirement pay as income exempt from Alabama income tax.[1] The state's veterans department summarizes the law (Code of Alabama §40-18-20): retirement benefits from U.S. military service, and the survivor benefits derived from them, are exempt from state, county, and municipal income tax.[2]
- Alabama also exempts combat-zone pay from state income tax (§40-18-3).[2]
- ADOR's exempt-income list also includes "United States Government Retirement Fund benefits." If you'll also have a federal civilian annuity, confirm with ADOR or a tax professional how yours is treated.[1]
- Alabama still taxes other income, such as a civilian salary, at 2% to 5%.[3]
Veteran property tax and homestead exemptions in Alabama
Alabama's homestead exemptions apply to an owner-occupied, single-family primary residence and up to 160 acres.[4] The main types (ADOR):[5]
| Type | Who | Benefit (summary) |
|---|---|---|
| H-1 | Homeowners under 65 and not disabled | $4,000 of assessed value exempt from state tax; $2,000 from county tax |
| H-3 (Disabled) | Permanently and totally disabled homeowners | Exempt from all ad valorem (property) taxes, with no income limit |
| H-2 / H-3 / H-4 | Age 65+ (by income), or retired due to permanent and total disability | Partial or full exemptions |
The ADVA notes that veterans claiming the disability exemption due to a service-connected disability don't have to recertify each year. A 2026 act (effective October 1, 2026) also lets those veterans get a county certificate their lender can use to leave property taxes out of debt-to-income calculations.[2] Homes acquired with a VA specially adapted housing grant are exempt as long as the veteran or un-remarried surviving spouse owns and lives in them.[2] Apply through the county tax assessing official. In Madison County, ask the county about deadlines.[5]
Alabama veteran benefits worth knowing
- ADVA Veterans Service Office (Madison County): free help filing VA claims and state benefits. 819 Cook Ave. NW, Suite 137, Huntsville. Call to confirm hours before visiting.[6,7]
- In-state tuition: under federal law (Veterans Choice Act §702), public colleges approved for the GI Bill must charge in-state rates to "covered individuals." That includes eligible veterans and family members using transferred benefits who live in the state.[8]
- Alabama G.I. Dependents' Scholarship: for eligible dependents of veterans with service-connected ratings of 40% or more (and certain other cases). It pays up to $400 per semester hour, plus up to $1,000 per semester for books and fees, at qualifying schools. Strict residency rules apply.[9,2]
- VETERAN on your driver's license: available to honorably discharged veterans who show a DD-214 at a driver license office.[2]
- State hiring preference: honorably discharged veterans get 5 points on Alabama state classified-service exams, and veterans with service-connected disabilities get 10. Spouses also get points under rules updated by a 2026 act effective January 1, 2027.[2]
- Veteran-owned businesses: an Alabama business more than 50% owned by veterans may be treated as a preferred vendor on state competitive bids. That lets the state pick its bid if it's within 5% of the lowest bid, though the state isn't required to.[2] For federal set-asides, apply for SBA VetCert.[10]
- License plates: Alabama offers retired-military, branch-of-service, and disabled-veteran plates, some with fee exemptions.[2]
Licenses and credentials: veterans and military spouses
- Military spouses: under Alabama's Military Family Jobs Opportunity Act (§31-1-6), most licensing boards must issue a license within 30 days to an eligible spouse with a similar license in good standing, or issue a temporary permit good for at least 360 days. Eligible spouses include those of transitioning members within 24 months of retirement and of DoD civil servants working in Alabama. Some boards are excluded, including medical, dental, pharmacy, and securities.[11] The Alabama Military Stability Foundation lists board contacts and the compacts Alabama has joined.[12]
- Veterans: certain Alabama licensing boards may accept military education, training, or service toward licensure. Ask the specific board.[2]

SkillBridge and TAP basics

Per the VA, you must have completed at least 180 continuous days on active duty, be able to finish the program within your final 180 days, and have chain-of-command approval.
